Baños: a bath with intention

Baños (pronounced BAH-nyos) is Spanish for Spiritual baths.

Baños, are spiritual baths used in many traditions, especially Latin American, Caribbean, Indigenous, and Afro-diasporic practices. Baños are meant to cleanse, protect, release, or attract specific energies.

Preparing Your Baños

1.Set your intention
Before anything, decide what your purpose is for this ritual. It may be along the lines of cleansing, protection, releasing, healing, or attracting something positive.

2. Prepare the water

  • If using a tub, fill it with warm water (you can add salts and essential oils if desired)

  • Add your herbs

    • A Rootz & Ritual Pro Tip: Knead herbs into water focusing on your intention. I like to boil my herbs, wait for them to cool and them pour them over myself, starting with my head while soaking in the tub.

  • If no tub: boil herbs in water, let it cool, then pour into a bowl or bucket to pour over yourself in the shower, or as a foot soak.

3.Create A Calm Space
Dim the lights, play soft music, or light a candle. To maintain the integrity of the space, burn incense or resin of your liking.

TAKING THE SPIRITUAL BATH

  • If using a tub, Soak for about 10–20 minutes. Breathe deeply and focus on releasing stress or negativity.

  • If pouring (a baño), after your regular shower, slowly pour the herbal water over your body. Start with the head.

    • As you pour, pray, speak, or think your intention. For example: “I release all negative energy and welcome peace and protection.”

Herbs have energy and water absorbs their energy. Whether in a tea, a simmer pot, or a soup that energy is being absorbed.

After care:

  • Let your body air dry if possible. This allows the energy to settle.

  • Avoid rinsing off right away. Allow the herbs to really integrate with your spirit.

  • Get into some cozy clothes that make you feel good.

  • Option to rest, meditate, or journal about the experience.

A few notes:

  • This practice is spiritual and cultural, not a medical treatment

  • If you have allergies or sensitive skin, be mindful of what herbs you use that may trigger them

  • Different traditions (like Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, or folk Catholic practices) may include specific prayers or steps that should be respected if you follow them
