Yoni Steam
Yoni steaming, or vaginal steaming, is a deeply spiritual practice and is also known for treatment of sexual and reproductive health. It is an ancient and spiritual practice that has been used for centuries all over the world, including India, Greece, Eastern Europe, Africa, Korea, the Philippines, Japan and among Mayan and Central American cultures.
This ritual practice involves sitting unclothed from the waist down over a pot of hot, herb-infused water. It’s known for cleaning the vulva and the Womb space, supporting the vagina, relieving period symptoms, and rebalancing hormone levels.
In my experience, yoni steams have been a deeply potent practice for clearing my womb space of energy that was not mine. Whether that was from toxic relationships or generational trauma I felt ready to release. There’s something incredibly grounding about taking the time to intentionally connect with my body in this way.
While there are many beautifully designed tools and seating options available for this sacred ritual, I personally enjoy keeping it simple. I use a small pot and my travel neck pillow as a seat, which makes the practice feel accessible, intimate, and just as effective. For me, it’s less about the setup and more about the intention I bring to the experience.

Yoni Steami Basic Setup
A heat-safe bowl or pot
Hot (not boiling) water or you’ll burn your Yoni
Optional Herbz Blend*
A comfortable place to sit or squat (some people use a special stool; others improvise like you described)
*Rootz & Ritual Herbz are all organic and food-grade; however, not every herbal combination is suitable for a yoni steam. For this practice, our only recommended blend is the Amor blend, which has been thoughtfully crafted with soothing and calming herbz. The Amor blend includes: catnip, chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, and rose petals, each selected for their gentle and comforting properties.
keep in mind that even with gentle herbs, everyone’s body can respond differently, so it’s important to listen to your body and discontinue use if any irritation occurs.
Steps
Boil water then let it cool slightly. The steam should bewarm, not intense or scalding.
If using herbs, add them and let steep for a few minutes.
Place the container in a stable spot where you can sit or squat over it safely.
Rootz & Ritual Pro Tip: I use a small pot and my travel neck pillow as a seat once cooled enough.
Sit or hover above the steam and wrap a towel or blanket around your waist to keep the steam contained.
Stay above the steam for about 10–20 minutes, or until the steam fades away.
Important safety tips
Never use boiling hot water, burns in this area can be harmful.
Stop immediately if you feel discomfort, irritation, or too much heat.
Avoid this practice if you’re pregnant, have an active infection, open wounds, or recent surgery.
Don’t do this ritual frequently; the vagina is a powerful, smart self-cleaning part of our sacred bodies. Too much steaming may disrupt its natural environment.
Yoni Steaming is a beautiful practice as a ritual or a moment of personal reflection. Something you might also want to incorporate are calming and grounding elements like music, breathwork, or journaling afterward.
Situations when a Yoni Steam should be avoided:
Pregnancy: Do not steam with any herbs if you are pregnant, as some herbs can trigger miscarriages.
Infections: Do not use herbs if you have an active yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or any infection, as the steam can worsen these conditions.
